When is the Best Time to List Your Aircraft for Sale?

October 29, 2025

If you’ve ever thought about selling your aircraft, you’ve probably wondered; when’s the right time to do it? Just like real estate or car sales, timing matters.

We analyzed over 78,000 aircraft listings from 2020 to 2025 to find out exactly which months give sellers the best shot at top dollar, and which months might leave money on the table.

The Big Market Timing Question

Our goal was simple: figure out when aircraft sell for the best prices and how listing trends change through the year. We looked at:

  • What months see the most aircraft hit the market
  • How prices change month-to-month
  • Whether some months consistently outperform others, even after accounting for aircraft age and total time (AFTT)

What We Found by Season

Summer: Busy Skies, Lower Prices

From June to August, listings spike. Nearly 29% of all aircraft go up for sale during the summer. But here’s the twist: prices are actually the lowest during this busy season.

  • June and July listings sell for 6–7% less than average.
  • Why? Likely oversupply. Many owners decide to sell after a spring flying season, flooding the market.

So while summer brings plenty of buyers and listings, it’s a buyer’s market, not a seller’s one.

Fall: A Sweet Spot for Sellers

The fall months, especially September, hit a balance between volume and value.

  • September accounts for 10% of annual listings.
  • Sellers see an average 3.2% price boost compared to baseline.

Think of it as the “Goldilocks zone” active buyers, but not so much inventory that prices fall.

Winter: Year-End Premiums

Here’s the standout: December is the single best month for top prices.

Even after adjusting for aircraft age and hours, December listings earn an 8.4% price premium; the highest of any month.

This likely comes from year-end tax planning and bonus season spending. Buyers looking for write-offs or upgrades before the new year drive up demand.

The only tradeoff? Fewer listings overall, meaning you might wait longer for the right buyer.

Spring: Moderate and Steady

Spring months (March–May) fall in the middle with steady activity, moderate prices, no major spikes or dips.

If you want a balanced, predictable market, spring is a safe bet.

Key Takeaways for Sellers

Goal Best Months Why
Maximize price December Year-end demand adds an 8.4% premium.
Balance speed and price September High buyer activity with above-average prices.
Quick sale August Highest buyer volume, even if prices are only average.
Avoid June–July Prices drop 6–7% due to oversupply.
Also avoid October Lower activity and softer pricing.

The Market Rhythm

  • Late summer: Buyers start shopping for fall/winter delivery.
  • December: Financial and tax incentives drive premium pricing.
  • Spring–Summer: Sellers flood the market after flying season, pushing prices down.

Understanding this rhythm can mean thousands of dollars in difference when you sell.

Final Thoughts

Aircraft markets move in seasons just like the weather.

If you can time your sale for September or December, you’re likely to see better results. But if you must list in summer, price strategically, competition will be fierce.

Selling an aircraft isn’t just about the aircraft itself. It’s about timing, strategy, and knowing when the market will smile on your listing.
